If Jesus is God, how can God die?
Quick answer
God as God cannot die. In the Incarnation, the eternal Son assumed a true human nature, and it is according to that human nature that Jesus died. The divine nature did not cease or perish.
The key distinction
Christian theology has always distinguished what is true of Christ according to his divinity from what is true according to his humanity. Death, thirst, fatigue, and suffering belong to the human nature he took. That is why Scripture can say both that Jesus is Lord of glory and that he was crucified.
Why this answers the dilemma
The objection assumes that if Jesus is God, every divine attribute must apply to him in exactly the same way at every moment with no Incarnation. That flattens the biblical claim. The Son did not abandon deity; he added a human nature and died as man for sinners.
