For instance, John 1:1 states, 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' This verse establishes that Jesus (the Word) is both distinct from the Father and yet fully God. Thus, the Christian understanding of God includes both the Father and the Son as divine, which is essential to the doctrine of the Trinity.
