Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, but how can God have a son?

The concept of God having a son is often misunderstood. In Christian theology, Jesus is referred to as the Son of God to express His unique relationship with the Father, not in a literal biological sense. This relationship is rooted in the doctrine of the Trinity, which describes God as one being in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God, yet there is only one God. Therefore, when Christians refer to Jesus as the Son, they are affirming His divinity and His role in the divine plan of salvation. Furthermore, the New Testament provides various passages that illustrate this relationship. For instance, John 1:1 states, 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' This verse emphasizes that Jesus (the Word) is both distinct from the Father and fully divine. Additionally, in John 10:30, Jesus declares, 'I and the Father are one,' reinforcing the unity of His divine nature with that of God the Father. It is also important to note that the term 'sonship' in this context is not about physical descent but rather about authority and relationship. In ancient cultures, a son often represented the father's interests and carried his authority. Thus, Jesus, as the Son of God, embodies the fullness of God's presence and authority on earth, which is a central theme in Christian belief.
