If Jesus is God, why does he pray to God?

In Christianity, God is understood as Tri-Personal, consisting of the Father, the Son (the eternal Word), and the Holy Spirit. This means that while Jesus prays to the Father, he is not praying to a separate God but engaging in a relationship within the Godhead. The New Testament teaches that Jesus, as the divine Word, became flesh and exemplified perfect obedience to God's will, which is the essence of true humanity. Therefore, Jesus' prayers and worship are expressions of his divine nature and his role as the perfect man who fulfills God's intentions for humanity. Moreover, the New Testament passages highlight Jesus' submission to the Father, which does not negate his divinity but rather affirms it. For instance, in John 4:34, Jesus states that his food is to do the will of the Father, demonstrating his commitment to God's purpose. Similarly, in John 5:19, he emphasizes that he can do nothing of himself but only what he sees the Father do. This mutual relationship of love and obedience showcases the unity and distinctiveness within the Godhead. Thus, the argument that Jesus praying to God undermines his divinity actually backfires. It illustrates that both Jesus and the Father are engaged in a perfect relationship, where Jesus, as the Son, fulfills his role in the divine plan. This understanding of the Trinity provides a coherent explanation for Jesus' prayers, affirming his divine identity while also highlighting his perfect humanity.
