This emphasizes the unique role of God in salvation. However, Christians assert that Jesus, as God incarnate, fulfills this role of savior. In John 1:1, it is declared that 'the Word was God,' indicating that Jesus is divine and thus has the authority to forgive sins. Moreover, the character of God is revealed throughout the Scriptures as compassionate and forgiving. Verses such as Psalm 86:5 affirm that God is 'good and forgiving,' which aligns with the Christian understanding of Jesus’ ministry on earth. He demonstrated God's character by forgiving sins, as seen in the account of the paralytic in Mark 2:5, where Jesus says, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.' This act illustrates that Jesus, being God, has the power to save and forgive. Furthermore, the desire of God to save sinners is evident in the story of Jonah and Nineveh, where God relents from punishment when the people repent. This shows that God's nature is to seek reconciliation rather than destruction. Therefore, when Christians claim that Jesus saves, they are asserting that He does so in accordance with God's character and purpose, as He is fully divine. Thus, the Christian belief in Jesus as the savior is consistent with the biblical portrayal of God’s saving work throughout history.
